Requirements for Admission to the MEC BSSW Internship/Field Work Practicum

Field Practicum is the culminating educational experience for the BSSW student. In order to ensure that students are ready to begin their Field Placement in the fall, it is important for students to complete the application process the spring semester preceding their fall field placement. The application is available the end of January to the end of March every year. All students accepted into Field Practicum are provided with a placement, unless they have provided a placement in their Field Application. To qualify for field practicum, all students are required to have completed SW 220, SW 231, SW 304, SW 330, SW 331 no later than the Spring semester preceding placement, and have taken all CORE courses.

To enter the field work phase of the program, students must meet specific criteria and submit an
application. Only those students who have met the program’s specified criteria and whose application has been approved will be permitted to continue on to the Field Education sequence of the degree program. Field Practicum I (SW 420) is offered in the fall semester and Field Practicum II (SW 421) is offered in the spring semester each year.

Criteria for acceptance into the field education include:

  1. Admission to the MEC BSSW Social Work Program
  2. The completion of at least 90 credits by the end of the semester preceding the start of placement.
  3. The completion of these 90 credits must include a grade of D or better in all required courses in College Option.
  4. The completion of these 90 credits must include a grade of C or better in all required courses for the Social Work Major.
  5. Achievement of a grade of C or better in all social work courses.
  6. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 at the time of applying (Please Note: A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in order to remain in the Field Practicum Program and the MEC BSSW Program)
  7. Completion of the Field Application for the Academic Year (The application is available the end of January to the end of March ever year.)
  8. Acceptance into the Field Practicum Program
  9. Successful completion (a grade of C or better) of SW 231, SW 304, SW 330, and SW 331 by or before the close of the Spring.
  10. Adherence to the NASW Code of Ethics (Appendix III in the Field Education Manual), and the Medgar Evers College Policy regarding Student Conduct (Appendix II in the Field Education Manual).

To not meet these requirements at the time of application, or otherwise notified, will result in not being admitted into the Field Practicum Program.
