Apply For the Helping Hands Grant

Rolling applications for Spring 2025 are now open—apply by May 22, 2025!

All funds for this grant program are made possible by the Medgar Evers College Educational Foundation and will be used to support students with educational financial needs. A student’s financial need will be determined by their expected family contribution (EFC) and/or Pell Grant eligibility. These funds are one-time only. Funds can be requested for emergencies like sudden homelessness, medical emergencies, domestic violence, or child care.

All applicants are requested to provide supporting documents to verify their case and review their application. These documents may include lease agreements, bill statements, official letters from institutions, notarized and dated letters from providers with balance due, etc. For more information on supporting documents see here.

Documentation for Common Expenses

Utilities:

  • Lease
  • Last two paid utilities receipts
  • Current utility bill with name of service provider, service details, account holder, address of service recipient, balance due, and due date

Rent:

  • Lease that includes payee information, lease holder’s name, address and amount
  • Letter from your landlord, stating your rental arears amount, notarized or stamped by your landlord.
  • Rental Ledger
  • Last two rent receipts
  • Rental bill

Medical Expenses:

  • Letter from your provider stating your amount due, notarized or stamped by the provider.
  • Medical bill or statement including service provider, contact number, and account balance.

Childcare:

  • Last two paid childcare receipts
  • Letter from your childcare provider stating your name, amount due, dates of service, notarized or stamped by the provider.
  • Childcare bill or statement with amount due and date of services
  • Birth certificate of child(ren)

Miscellaneous/Transportation/Major Repair/Essential Furniture/Replacement of Critical Personal Items:

  • Notarized letter documenting theft/natural disaster, unstable home conditions, etc.
  • Bill of repair with date of services, amount due, name of recipient of services, name of provider, signed or notarized by the provider.
  • Legal documentation indicating amount due, due dates, service provider, and service recipient
  • HRA denial letter with name of recipient and date of denial.
  • Notarized or signed letter from a homeless shelter indicating your residence status
  • Official letter from your program indicating your acceptance
  • Itemized shopping cart from an online store (such as Amazon or Walmart) of essential furniture or critical personal items
