Dr. Brenda Greene interviews Talib Kweli Greene, an American hip hop artist, lyrical poet, entrepreneur and activist, and the author of Vibrate Higher: A Rap Story (MCD/Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2021). The memoir recounts his personal life as well as his views on hip hop, activism, the media, and politics. Greene and Kweli Greene discuss his goal of telling the collective stories of people who have influenced him as an artist and the educational, musical, cultural arts, and political influences on his life and music. He also discusses his creative process and the place of geography and music on his craft.

About the Guest
Talib Kweli Greene is an American hip hop artist, entrepreneur, and activist. Kweli earned recognition early on through his collaboration with fellow Brooklyn rapper Mos Def, when they formed the group Black Star. Kweli’s musical career continued with solo success including collaborations with producers and rappers Kanye West, Just Blaze, and Pharrell Williams. His most recent solo album entitled Gotham, was released in 2020. In 2011, Kweli founded his own record label, Javotti Media. He is also the host of the podcast The People’s Party.
