English Writing, Minor

The English Writing Minor (ENGWR-MIN) is a flexible 12-credit undergraduate program designed for students in any major who want to significantly enhance their writing skills. It’s a highly practical minor that gives you an edge in the job market and can serve as a seamless bridge if you later decide to pursue a B.A. in English.

Description

Choosing the Writing Concentration means you’ll focus on practical and creative application. You’ll start with a foundation course in Intermediate Composition (ENGL 210) and then select three specialized writing courses (9 credits) that align with your career goals. This minor allows you to build a portfolio in areas like:

  • Creative Writing: Fiction, Poetry, or Drama.
  • Professional Writing: Technical Writing, Journalism, or Magazine Articles.

This specialized focus ensures you develop clear, persuasive, and targeted communication skills valued across all professions.

Requirements

Students must complete the following four (4) courses or 12 credits.

  • Required Core Course (3 credits):
    • ENGL 210 – Intermediate Composition
  • Writing Electives (9 credits): Complete at least 3 courses from the following list:
    • ENGL 301, 302 (Fiction Writing)
    • ENGL 303, 306 (Poetry Writing)
    • ENGL 304 (Creative Writing/Drama)
    • ENGL 310 (Journalism: News and Feature Writing)
    • ENGL 311 (Technical Writing)
    • ENGL 312 (Magazine Article Writing)
    • ENGL 313 (Writing for Science and Technology)
    • ENGL 362 (Advanced Professional Writing Workshop)
