The Associate in Arts (A.A.) in English is a fantastic two-year degree designed to give you a strong foundation in reading, critical thinking, and advanced writing. This 60-credit program is perfect if you know you love English and want a degree that prepares you directly for a four-year B.A. program (a “transfer degree”) or gives you highly valued communication skills for the job market right away.

Major Description
As an English A.A. student, you won’t just read books—you’ll learn how to analyze and interpret challenging literary texts while becoming an expert communicator. The curriculum balances general education requirements (like Math, Science, and History) with core English classes. You’ll master essential academic writing skills and dive into literary studies, ensuring you’re ready to tackle upper-level courses should you continue your education.
Major Requirements
- Required Core (12 Credits)
- English Composition:
- ENGL 112 – College English I
- ENGL 150 – College English II
- Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning:
- MTH 115 – Nature Of Mathematics OR MTH 136 – Intermediate Algebra and Trigonometry
- Life and Physical Sciences:
- BIO 101 – Introduction to the Science of Biology
- PHS 101 – Introduction to Physical Sciences (Note: PHS 101 is required, but it is not listed as preparing you for upper-level BIO degrees.)
- English Composition:
- Flexible Core (18 Credits)
You must select courses (3 credits each) to satisfy all these areas:- World Cultures and Global Issues: (e.g., ANTH 201 or ENGL 212)
- U.S. Experience in its Diversity: (e.g., HIST 200)
- Creative Expressions: (e.g., ART 100 or MUS 100)
- Individual and Society: (e.g., ECON 100, PA 103, or SOC 101)
- Scientific World: (e.g., BIO 211 or CIS 101)
- One Additional Flexible Core Course
- Major Requirements (12 Credits)
- Required Core English:
- ENGL 210 – Intermediate Composition
- ENGL 211 – Introduction To Literary Studies
- English Electives: Earn at least 6 credits from approved English electives (See your advisor for options).
- Required Core English:
Additional Requirements– You must maintain an average GPA of 2.0 and complete 60 total credits.
