General Education Requirements
General Education: Your Foundation for Success
What is “Gen Ed”? You might be wondering why a Business major needs to take a History class, or why a Future Teacher needs to take Math. These are called General Education (or “Gen Ed”) requirements. Think of these classes as the “foundation” of your college degree—the same way a house needs a strong floor before you can build the walls.
Why do I need these classes? Gen Ed classes aren’t just “extra” work. They are designed to give you a “starter kit” of skills that every boss looks for, no matter what job you have. These include:
- Strong Communication: Learning how to write clearly and speak with confidence.
- Smart Problem Solving: Learning how to look at a challenge and find a creative solution.
- Understanding the World: Learning about different cultures, history, and science so you can be an informed leader.
How it Works Every student at Medgar Evers College takes these core classes during their first two years. By the time you start your “Major” classes, you will already have the writing and thinking skills you need to ace your most difficult subjects.
