New Faculty: Sharon James

Dr. James serves as Assistant Professor in the Accounting Department. She earned her BS in Business Administration and Accounting in 2017 and 2021 respectively from Medgar Evers College. While a student at MEC, she served as a Supplemental Instructor and College Assistant and assisted in Summer Bootcamp for the Accounting Department. Dr. James expressed interest in leadership as a student, and as such held position as president of the Junior Class in Student Government and also served on the College Curriculum Committee. That desire to lead motivated her to organize her peers to establish a college club, Voices for Self-reliance, where members got practice in, and were exposed to real-world business situations besides their academics. Experience she acquired as a college student and as a teacher from the school she founded, and as a CFO in several organizations including James Management Consulting, Inc, a business consulting firm and Redemption Community World Ministries, Inc, a church organization, both located in Brooklyn, NY and outreach work with several community organizations, helped prepare her for her role as an assistant professor.

Dr. James’ interest in accounting stemmed from her work and interactions in the various organizations where she worked and volunteered over the years. She believes that accounting should not be viewed in isolation, but as part of a larger business system. Hence, she finds that engaging her students using discovery-based or conceptual learning is quite rewarding, as they are able to connect concepts they are exposed to, to real-life situations.

Since graduating from Medgar Evers College, Dr. James has earned her MBA from Long Island University, MS in Accounting from Liberty University and Doctor of Management from Touro University Worldwide. In keeping with her academic research, her goal is to work with community businesses to help them implement and improve their accounting strategies.
