Carroll and Milton Petrie Emergency Fund
The Carroll and Milton Petrie Fund provides one-time, short-term emergency financial assistance to degree-seeking students who are in good academic standing and facing an unexpected financial hardship that may jeopardize their ability to remain enrolled at Medgar Evers College. The fund is intended to help students overcome urgent, non-recurring financial challenges and continue their academic pursuits without interruption.
The Carroll and Milton Petrie Fund is a grant designed to provide students with short-term financial support. If you are experiencing an unexpected financial emergency that may affect your ability to remain enrolled at Medgar Evers College, you may be eligible for assistance through the Carroll and Milton Petrie Fund Emergency Assistance Program.
This program provides one-time, non-recurring financial assistance of up to $3,000 to eligible degree-seeking students in good academic standing who are facing a short-term financial crisis.
Examples of eligible emergencies include:
- Risk of losing childcare services
- Housing insecurity or homelessness
- Past-due rent, utility, or medical bills
- Theft of essential belongings such as a computer or textbooks
- Fire or flood damage
- Travel due to the serious illness or death of an immediate family member
Please note:
- Funds cannot be used for tuition.
- Students who have previously received a Petrie Grant or Helping Hands Grant are not eligible.
- All applicants must demonstrate that they have exhausted other available resources.
- Approved funds will be paid directly to vendors, not to students.
Who is Eligible
Eligibility Requirements:
- Currently enrolled, matriculated Medgar Evers College student (e-Permit and visiting students are ineligible to apply)
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
- Good academic and conduct standing
- Demonstrated financial emergency
- No refund received during the semester of application
Non-Eligible Emergencies:
- Current tuition and fees, whether full or partial
- Outstanding tuition balances or prior college tuition debts
- Cell phone bills
- Vehicle expenses, including car payments, insurance, and fuel costs
- Credit card debt
- Non-emergency travel expenses
- Recurring or ongoing financial obligations
- Legal fees or expenses related to obtaining legal representation
- Textbooks or course-related expenses

How to Apply:
- Review the eligibility requirements.
- Prepare a written statement describing your emergency in detail.
- Gather supporting documentation showing your name and the emergency expense (e.g., past due bills, eviction notices, rental agreements, notarized letters). All documents must have the student’s name on them; vendor information must also be on the document provided. Documents submitted without the student’s name will be considered invalid.
- Click the Apply Now button to submit the online application.
- Respond promptly to any requests for additional information from your MEC-issued email address.
Important Information
- All communication will be sent to students using their MEC student email only.
- Awards are capped at $3000. Approved funds are paid directly to vendors, not students.
- A confirmation email will be sent after your application is submitted.
- Students can expect to receive a decision regarding their eligibility within 10 to 14 business days after the Petrie Committee has reviewed their application. Please keep this timeline in mind when submitting your application, as the review period begins once the application is reviewed by the committee and may not coincide with the date of submission. Please note that weekends and holidays are not included in the 10 to 14 business day review period.
