Dr. Augustine Okereke joined Medgar Evers College in August 2001 as Assistant Professor. He served as Senior Vice President and Provost at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York (CUNY) from April 2014. He held this position until June 2022. In October 2013, he was appointed Interim Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Education. He became Chair of the English Department from 2008 until 2013. Prior to becoming Chair of English Department, he was Assistant Professor of English in 2001 and taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts in Africana Studies in the summers of 2002 and 2003. Dr. Okereke teaches courses in African and World Literature in the Department of English and World Languages. He received his BA from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, MA from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and PhD from the University of Bielefeld, Germany. His dissertation is on the Heroic Oral Narratives of the Igbos of Nigeria. Author of one book, Heroic Oral Narratives of the Igbos of Nigeria and several articles in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Okereke has presented in several academic conferences and has given keynote speeches in education conferences. His current research interest is in “Digitizing Oral Literary Narratives.” He is currently a Full Professor of English at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York.
