Support Orlando

y now all of you are aware of the tragedy in Orlando, Florida this weekend. In what officials are calling an act of terrorism, a gunman killed 49 people and injured 53 others in an early Sunday shooting at a nightclub. Many have labeled this a hate crime: the club in question was gay. The horrific event in Orlando is now the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Our community stands with the city of Orlando and with everyone who denounces this stunning act of hatred. We send our deepest condolences to those touched by the violence. I also ask us here at Medgar Evers to remain firm in our commitment to maintain a campus and college community that affirms the dignity and the rights of every single individual, no matter their sexual orientation, national origin, gender, race, or religion. We have zero tolerance at Medgar Evers College for discrimination or intolerance, in word or deed.

Sadly, we now live in a world where classrooms, houses of worship, movie theaters, and nightclubs are also scenes of violence and terrorism.

The goal of terrorists is to inspire fear and to sow division. Let us be brave and let us always be aware that our common humanity trumps our differences. Our core values of equality and justice define us as a nation. Our College motto — courage, strength, fortitude — has never been more needed.
