With the recent government shutdown ending, local news outlet NY-1 sent reporter Louis Finley to the Medgar Evers College campus as part of a larger report on what CUNY is doing to help the nearly 50 percent of students throughout the 26 schools that make up the City University of New York who lost SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program), the federally funded food policy for low-income families.

CUNY authorized added funding so supplies could be restocked at onsite food pantries in addition to providing an additional grant that allows students to buy up to $250 worth of food at a nearby grocery store. Finley came and spoke with Dr. Waleek Boone, Medgar Evers College Transition Academy founder/director and Medgar Evers College Senior Jahmarley Irving about the impact these SNAP cutbacks have had and how the Cougar Country Food Pantry and the Transition Academy is attempting to make up the shortfall.

With the holidays quickly approaching, November 16-22 is Combat Hunger Week, which means the Cougar Country Pantry will be open with extended hours to ensure students facing food insecurity have access to a hot meal for Thanksgiving. During this week, all Medgar Evers College students are encouraged to visit the pantry, learn about available resources, and take advantage of the support offered. Turkeys will be distributed on Monday, November 16 and Saturday, November 22 to Medgar Evers College students, and additional holiday food items will be available while supplies last. The goal is to help every student feel supported, valued, and prepared for the holiday break, and the Transition Academy wants everyone to know they are welcome.
