The New York State Senate has renamed a bill currently under consideration after beloved Medgar Evers College professor and administrator, the late Dr. John Flateau, according to POLITICO Pro.

“We unfortunately lost a legend, a giant in voting rights,”  Elections Committee chair Zellnor Myrie (D-Brooklyn) told POLITICO. “And I’m really looking forward to honoring him in that way to hopefully get that across the finish line in both houses.”

The bill is focused on the state’s Board of Elections maintaining a central database of election results. Currently, the results are scattered across 58 local board offices.

Dr. Flateau was a long-time political strategist, working with former New York City mayor David Dinkins as his chief of staff, while also advising a number of current politicians.

He was also a leader with the Independent Redistricting Commission.
