Dr. Marcella Maxwell, long-time Medgar Evers College instructor, passes away

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of long-time Medgar Evers College supporter, instructor, dean and friend, Dr. Marcella Maxwell. She was 96.

For years, Dr. Maxwell was a staple of our Central Brooklyn campus, advocating through team-building seminars, designing curriculum, and establishing key instructional strategies as the clinical supervisor for teaching fellows at Medgar Evers College.

A well-known and outspoken champion of social justice, Dr. Maxwell was a Commissioner of Human Rights and Chair of the Commission on the Status of Women under NYC mayors Ed Koch and David Dinkins.

She was a lifetime member of the NAACP and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Dr. Maxwell was incredibly well-educated, receiving a Masters degree in Elementary Education from Long Island University and a doctorate in Education from Fordham University.
