Black History Month 2024: Medgar Evers College hosting tribute event for Dr. John Flateau

decorativeIn late December, we lost a cornerstone of Medgar Evers College, as the beloved Dr. John Flateau passed away at the age of 73.

His decades-long impact on our campus reverberated around the community, as the work he did inside and outside the classroom as a professor and public servant is unparalleled.

On Monday, February 5, 2024, you will have a chance to pay your respects to the late Dr. Flateau, as the college and his family are hosting a tribute to his life from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the AB1 cafeteria.

The programming aligns with the school’s Black History Month campaign, as Dr. Flateau’s impact on the Black community is well known across the world. He was a critical part of helping David Dinkins get elected as the first Black mayor in New York City history, while also contributing his political strategy to the campaign of current Mayor Eric Adams.

The February 5 tribute will be an opportunity for staff, students and the community to reflect on how they have been impacted by Dr. Flateau.
