AB1 Building Reopening: The AB1 Building will reopen on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, for all scheduled activities, except for select offices on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. Faculty and staff in affected offices will receive separate instructions. All other areas of the AB-1 building and all other campus buildings will be operational.
The Mission of the Department of Biology is congruent with the Mission of Medgar Evers College. The Department is committed to the fulfillment of the educational and social needs of the Central Brooklyn community and beyond. We aim to provide science majors with a comprehensive and robust degree program that provides the experiential learning necessary for them to successfully pursue careers in the biological, biomedical, and health-related professions. In keeping with the philosophy of Medgar Evers College and the City University of New York, the Department of Biology is committed to serving all students seeking self-improvement and an opportunity to develop a personal value system. Our degree programs are designed to promote greater inclusiveness of people from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to gain access to rewarding careers in Biology and related fields. In addition,
courses are offered to non-science majors to enrich their liberal arts education.

Department of Biology Goals

  • To increase the participation of students with diverse educational, socio-political, and cultural backgrounds in the biological sciences, in the professions of medicine, dentistry, research, teaching, and other biology-related fields;
  • To provide students with the essential knowledge and skills needed for career advancement and professional mobility;
  • To provide knowledge of the role that modern biological science and technology play in society and to provide students with a sense of responsibility for their humanistic applications;
  • To prepare students for leadership roles in their communities and to foster their personal growth and development;
  • To enrich the knowledge and experiences of residents of the community in the biological sciences; and
  • To increase community awareness and interaction to further collaboration and advocacy to enhance support for students and programs in the biological sciences.
