Global Agents in Teacher Education – GATE
The key goals of this proposed Hawkins Center of Excellence four-year program at Medgar Evers College, identified as MEC Global Agents in Teacher Education (GATE) are to:
- To recruit, prepare, and graduate up to 100 teachers of color with either a BA degree program below;
- To increase the number of certified bilingual teachers of color (with targeted certifications options in Spanish,
French, Haitian Creole, or American Sign Language) to serve students with and without disabilities in multilingual urban settings; - To increase teacher effectiveness in research-based interdisciplinary instruction and culturally responsive
pedagogy and practice.
MEC Teacher Preparation Degree Programs
- BA Childhood Education (Grades 1-6)
- BA Childhood Special Education (Grades 1-6)
- BA Early Special Childhood Education (Birth – Grade 2)
Project Entry Requirements:
- 30 credits General Ed
- Completed EDUC 102, 110, 152 and 231 and co-reqs 501-503
- GPA 3.0 and above
- Completed or prepared to take ATAS Certification
Project Benefits for Teaching Candidates
- Gate residency in partner schools from sophomore through graduation
- Each year 5 students will participate / attend a teacher education conference
- Supervised field-based experiences in partner schools
- Counseling services
- Language extension pods
- Supplemental instruction services
- Advisement / faculty mentoring by degree program
- Enhanced learning opportunities / special workshops
- ATAS / NYSTCE certification reimbursement
- Winter and summers NYSTCE certification workshops
- Supplies / materials subsidy covered: $180/yr
- Stipend of $2,000 over the 2 semesters of clinical practice
