Computer Information Systems, BS

The Computer Information Systems program helps you master the skills to solve real-world problems using technology. You’ll learn how to design, manage, and protect the systems that keep businesses and communities connected.

The B.S. in Computer Information Systems requires a total of at least 120 credits with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.

Degree Requirements

  • Total Credits: Earn at least 120 credits.
  • Residency: Earn at least 30 credits in Residence at Medgar Evers College.
  • GPA: Earn a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
  • Liberal Arts and Sciences: Earn at least 60 credits of Liberal Arts and Sciences Content Courses.

Description

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Information Systems (CIS) is a rigorous, interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for professional careers in the rapidly evolving technology sector. This major integrates core business principles with specialized technical knowledge, equipping graduates with the skills to design, build, and implement software and information solutions that drive modern organizations.

The curriculum is structured around a foundation in programming, data analytics, and business fundamentals (including Accounting, Finance, and Management). Students progress to advanced topics in:

  • System Development: Learning to analyze, design, and implement complex information systems.
  • Networking and Security: Understanding how data is communicated, distributed, and protected.
  • Database Management: Mastering the structure and management of large data sets.

The program offers flexibility through two focused concentrations:

  1. Systems Analysis & Design: Focuses on the development process, database management, and electronic commerce.
  2. Network Systems Management: Focuses on network operating systems, information security, and distributed computing.

Graduates are prepared for roles such as Software Engineer, Systems Analyst, Network Administrator, and Cybersecurity Specialist, bridging the gap between business needs and technological execution.

General Education Requirements (CUNY Common Core & College Option)

These requirements align with the CUNY Common Core and College Option structure:

  • Required Core (12 Credits):
    • English Composition: ENGL 112 and ENGL 150.
    • Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning: 1 course (e.g., MTH 115).
    • Life and Physical Sciences: 1 course (e.g., BIO 101 or PHS 101).
  • Flexible Core (18 Credits – 6 Courses): Complete one course in each of the five areas, plus an additional Flexible Core course in any area. No more than two courses from any one discipline are permitted.
    • World Cultures and Global Issues
    • U.S. Experience in its Diversity
    • Creative Expressions
    • Individual and Society (e.g., ECON 212 or ECON 213)
    • Scientific World (e.g., CIS 101).
  • College Option (9 Credits – 3 Courses):
    • Socio-Cultural and Diversity Cluster III: 1 course (e.g., SOC 202).
    • Integrative Knowledge Cluster IV:

      • Integrative Knowledge Cluster IV (Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics)

Major Requirements

Students must fulfill the Required Core Courses and select one Concentration to complete the major.

  • Economics: ECON 212
  • Finance: FIN 250
  • Law: LAW 208
  • Management: MAN 200
  • Math: MTH 213

Major Elective
Students must fulfill 6 Open Elective credits

Concentration Options

Students must select one of the following concentrations:

  1. Systems Analysis & Design Concentration
    • Required Courses: CIS 320 (Fundamentals of Electronic Commerce), CIS 332 (Advanced Programming), CIS 340 (Visual Basic), CIS 400 (Database Management Systems)
    • Electives: Earn at least 3 credits from Business Electives 300 to 400 level.
  2. Network Systems Management Concentration
    • Required Courses: CIS 323 (Network Operating Systems), CIS 331 (Information Security), CIS 403 (Computer Networks), CIS 423 (Distributed and Client/Server Computing)
    • Electives: Earn at least 3 credits from Business Electives 300 to 400 level.
