The A.S. degree in Business Administration introduces students to fundamental concepts and philosophies in business and liberal arts and prepares students for pre-managerial entry-level positions as well as continuing studies for the B.S. degree in Business or the Bachelor of Professional Studies in Applied Management.

Description
The Associate of Science (A.S.) in Business Administration at Medgar Evers College is a two-year degree program designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and analytical skills required for success in the business world. This program offers a comprehensive introduction to key business functions, including accounting, economics, and management.
The A.S. degree serves two primary purposes:
- Career Entry: It prepares graduates for entry-level administrative and support positions in various industries, enabling them to immediately contribute to organizations.
- Transfer Pathway: It provides a strong, transferable foundation for students planning to continue their education and pursue a Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.B.A.) in Business, Accounting, or a related field at a four-year institution.
The curriculum balances required core liberal arts courses with essential business coursework, focusing on developing quantitative reasoning, communication, and basic business problem-solving skills.

Requirements
The A.S. in Business Administration requires a total of at least 60 credits with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
1. A.S. Degree Requirements
- Total Credits: Earn at least 120 credits.
- Residency: Earn at least 30 credits in Residence at Medgar Evers College.
- GPA: Earn a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
2. General Education Requirements (CUNY Common Core & College Option)
These requirements align with the CUNY Common Core and College Option structure:
- Required Core (12 Credits):
- English Composition: ENGL 112 and ENGL 150.
- Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning: 1 course (e.g., MTH 115).
- Life and Physical Sciences: 1 course (e.g., BIO 101 or PHS 101).
- Flexible Core (18 Credits – 6 Courses): Complete one course in each of the five areas, plus an additional Flexible Core course in any area. No more than two courses from any one discipline are permitted.
- World Cultures and Global Issues
- U.S. Experience in its Diversity
- Creative Expressions
- Individual and Society (e.g., ECON 212 or ECON 213)
- Scientific World (e.g., CIS 101).
- College Option (9 Credits – 3 Courses):
- Socio-Cultural and Diversity Cluster III: 1 course (e.g., SOC 202).
- Integrative Knowledge Cluster IV:
- Socio-Cultural and Diversity Cluster III
- Integrative Knowledge Cluster IV (Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics)
3. Major Requirements
The major requires a minimum of 78 credits and a minimum grade of C in all courses within the major.

Students must complete ALL of the following required core courses (9 Courses), ensuring a minimum grade of “C”:
- Accounting: ACCT 217 – Principles of Accounting I
- Business/Intro: BUS 103 – Introduction To Business
- Technology: CIS 211 – Internet and Emerging Technologies
- Economics: ECON 212 – Introduction to Macroeconomics
- Finance: FIN 250 – Introduction to Business Finance
- Law: LAW 208 – Legal Environmental of Business
- Management: MAN 200 – Principles of Management
- Marketing: MAR 231 – Essentials of Marketing
- Statistics: MTH 213 – Introduction To Statistics
Major Elective
- Business Electives: Earn at least 3 credits from the list of approved Business Electives.
Student Learning Outcomes
After completing the BPS in Applied Management, students should be able to:
- Identify basic functional areas of a business
- Discuss the role of business in society
- Examine aspects of a business that contribute to success
- Understand the importance of marketing
- Solve simple business problems numerically
