Description
Unlike the more theoretical Bachelor of Science, the B.P.S. in Applied Management emphasizes practical, application-focused knowledge and skills needed to enter various business careers. The curriculum provides essential competencies required for professional success, lifelong learning, and entry into graduate and professional schools. Students have the opportunity to pursue research, internships (Field Experience/Internship), and professional enhancement, benefiting from the department’s liaisons with corporate, government, and community organizations.
The program requires a core set of business courses and allows students to specialize by selecting courses in one of three concentrations:
- Business Services Management
- Social Services Administration
- Health Services Administration

Requirements
The B.P.S. in Applied Management requires a total of at least 120 credits with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
1. B.P.S. Degree Requirements
- Total Credits: Earn at least 120 credits.
- Residency: Earn at least 30 credits in Residence at Medgar Evers College.
- GPA: Earn a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
- Liberal Arts and Sciences: Earn at least 60 credits of Liberal Arts and Sciences Content Courses.
2. General Education Requirements (CUNY Common Core & College Option)
These requirements align with the CUNY Common Core and College Option structure:
- Required Core (12 Credits):
- English Composition: ENGL 112 and ENGL 150.
- Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning: 1 course (e.g., MTH 115).
- Life and Physical Sciences: 1 course (e.g., BIO 101 or PHS 101).
- Flexible Core (18 Credits – 6 Courses): Complete one course in each of the five areas, plus an additional Flexible Core course in any area. No more than two courses from any one discipline are permitted.
- World Cultures and Global Issues
- U.S. Experience in its Diversity
- Creative Expressions
- Individual and Society (e.g., ECON 212 or ECON 213)
- Scientific World (e.g., CIS 101).
- College Option (9 Credits – 3 Courses):
- Socio-Cultural and Diversity Cluster III: 1 course (e.g., SOC 202).
- Integrative Knowledge Cluster IV:
- Socio-Cultural and Diversity Cluster III
- Integrative Knowledge Cluster IV (Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics)
3. Major Requirements
The major requires a minimum of 78 credits and a minimum grade of C in all courses within the major.
- Required Core Courses (14 Courses):
- ACCT 217, ACCT 227, BUS 402, BUS 451, CIS 211, ECON 212, FIN 250, LAW 208, MAN 200, MAN 314, MAN 316, MAN 401 (Internship), MAR 231, MTH 213 OR SSC 303 (Statistics)
- Concentration: Earn at least 21 credits by selecting one of the three options below.
- Business Services Management: ECON 305, MAN 317, MAN 351, MAN 403, MAN 416, MAR 331, MAR 335, MAR 336, MAR 337, MAR 434 (Minimum of 21 credits required from this list)
- Social Services Administration: PA 300, PA 330, PA 340, SOC 300, SOC 302, SOC 336, SOC 457, SSC 304 (Minimum of 21 credits required from this list)
- Health Services Administration: HSA 300, HSA 302, HSA 310, HSA 400, HSC 301, HSC 302 (Minimum of 21 credits required from this list). Student must also earn 3 elective credits.
- Electives: Earn at least 15 credits of Free Electives.
Student Learning Outcomes
After completing the BPS in Applied Management, students should be able to:
- Describe the basic functioning of organizations and work of managers
- Comprehend the legal environment of organizations
- Explain the role and functioning of Human Resource management within organizations
- Apply concepts, theories and principles from the area of management to real-life organizational situations
