Greetings from the School of Education at Medgar Evers College. It is my privilege to welcome you to a community of educators, scholars, and future leaders who believe in the transformative power of education. We believe that teaching is more than a profession; it is a calling to serve, to inspire, and to transform lives. This belief is reflected in the School of Education’s guiding motto: Educate to Liberate.
Located in the heart of Central Brooklyn, the School of Education is proud to be part of Medgar Evers College, a uniquely designed Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) whose foundation is rooted in the Civil Rights Movement, the pursuit of social justice, the cultural heritage of Central Brooklyn, and the enduring legacy of Medgar Wiley Evers. Within this rich tradition, we prepare effective, knowledgeable, reflective, and culturally responsive educators who are equipped to serve diverse learners and to lead with excellence, integrity, and purpose.
Our School prepares future educators through two distinguished academic Departments:
- Developmental and Special Education, one of the few undergraduate programs in the nation offering dual certification in general and special education, preparing candidates to improve outcomes for children with diverse learning needs.
- Multicultural Early Childhood and Elementary Education, preparing educators to become change agents who create inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments for children and families. This Department also offers an Associate of Arts (AA) pathway into the Bachelor’s program, creating an accessible route into the field of education for paraprofessionals and others who may not otherwise have had access to this career path.
Students benefit from rigorous academic preparation, meaningful clinical experiences, and hands-on learning through partnerships with local schools, including the Ella Baker/Charles Romain Child Development Center, which is located on campus. We are fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and remain in good standing, reflecting our commitment to excellence, continuous improvement, and evidence-informed educator preparation.
We believe that meaningful learning begins with belonging. Our commitment is to foster a community in which every student is welcomed, supported, challenged, and empowered to succeed. Through collaboration, scholarship, and service, we prepare educators who will make a lasting difference in classrooms, schools, and communities throughout New York City and beyond.
Whether you are beginning your journey toward becoming an educator, advancing your professional career, or exploring opportunities to partner with us, I invite you to discover all that the School of Education has to offer.
Together, we are preparing educators who change lives, strengthen communities, and advance educational equity.
