As the Founding Dean of this new School of Education, I am very excited to welcome you to the Medgar Evers College family. I know that you will benefit greatly from the time that you spend here and the experiences you would gain in your journey to becoming change agents for our global classrooms, schools, communities.
As a new School of Education, we are determined to change the culture of urban education, and I am extremely proud of the work we do. We prepare candidates to become teachers of children at the most critical periods of their development: early childhood and elementary levels. We also prepare candidates to serve children and students who are most vulnerable: children with disabilities. We accept the special obligations that are attached to educating teachers who will work and live within a multicultural community and who will strive to promote the best education for all children.
As an education major, you have a choice among three nationally accredited, professional, career-oriented baccalaureate degree programs. You also have an option to pursue a transitional pre-professional Associate’s degree program that provides you with the credentials to work in schools as a paraprofessional or teaching assistant while continuing your studies in one of the professional bachelor’s degree programs that may interest you. Please explore these options under our two academic departments: 1) Department of Developmental and Special Education, and 2) Department of Multicultural Early Childhood and Elementary Education.
Throughout this journey, you will engage with a cadre of distinguished faculty who are also experts in many academic disciplines: mathematics, science, technology, literacy, psychology, special education, social sciences, the arts, foreign languages, among others, to provide you with an interdisciplinary curriculum suited for our early childhood and elementary education programs. Our faculty provide classroom instruction, facilitate local and global experiential learning, provide mentoring and advisement for you. In addition, we provide extensive support through targeted instruction and skill building workshops to aid your mastery of challenging subjects. I urge you to seek us out and utilize all the resources that are available to you.
I encourage you to get involved in the extra-curricular activities such as the student-led Education Club. Participate in the faculty-student research projects and conference presentations to showcase your own work as you grow into the professional we know you will become. Please take some time to navigate our Website to learn more about our clinically rich and rewarding teacher preparation programs, and other opportunities. On behalf of the Chairs, faculty and staff of the School of Education, I welcome you and look forward to helping you achieve your goals here at Medgar Evers College.
In love and service,
Sheilah M. Paul, PhD
