Our Mission

The Environmental Science Program at Medgar Evers College (MEC) is dedicated to preparing students with the scientific knowledge, analytical skills, and hands-on experience needed for careers in industry and academia, addressing pressing environmental challenges at the local, national, and global levels. The program integrates chemistry, biology, physics, and earth sciences with environmental policy, sustainability, and environmental justice frameworks. Through instruction, research, and community engagement, the program promotes responsible stewardship of natural resources, advances environmental justice, and creates pathways for students from underrepresented groups in STEM to become leaders in science, policy, and industry.

The mission of the program aligns directly with the College’s broader commitment to academic excellence, social justice, and service to the Central Brooklyn community. Environmental challenges disproportionately impact urban communities of color, and this program addresses those inequities by equipping students with the scientific expertise, professional skills, and advocacy tools necessary to effect meaningful change. Through collaborations with industry, leading research institutions, and government organizations, faculty provide opportunities for students to build competitive undergraduate portfolios that lead to employment and graduate study.
