About the Episode
In this rebroadcast, Dr. Brenda M. Greene interviews Maurice Carlos Ruffin, author of a book of short stories, The Ones Who Don’t Say They Love You (One World/Random House, 2021). Ruffin explores the complexity of Black life in New Orleans and presents the stories of those whose voices are invisible, silenced, and marginalized. His stories focus on social and environmental justice, homelessness, domestic abuse, drugs, the LBGTQIA community, and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Greene and Ruffin discuss his writing process, the themes in his stories, and the role of Black literature.

About the Guest
Maurice Carlos Ruffin is the author of The Ones Who Don’t Say They Love You, which One World/Random House published in August 2021. His first book, We Cast a Shadow, was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, and the PEN America Open Book Prize. Ruffin is the winner of several literary prizes, including the Iowa Review Award in fiction. A New Orleans native, Ruffin is a professor of creative writing at Louisiana State University, and the 2020–2021 John and Renee Grisham Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi.
