Description

The Accounting program helps you master the language of business. You’ll study financial reporting, taxes, auditing, and business law while developing critical thinking and leadership skills. Whether your goal is to work at a major firm, start your own business, or continue to graduate school, this program gives you a strong foundation to build a successful career in today’s fast-paced business world. Key areas of study include:

  • Financial Accounting: Principles, intermediate, and advanced concepts.
  • Taxation: Federal Taxation I and II.
  • Auditing and Fraud: Auditing and Fraud Examination.
  • Managerial Accounting: Cost Accounting I and II.
  • Business Law and Finance: Courses in the legal environment of business, business law, and corporate finance.
  • Technology: Internet and emerging technologies, and contemporary computer applications.

This program helps you graduate with great business smarts and the technical skills you need to become a successful professional accountant.

Program and Degree

Requirements

The B.S. in Accounting requires a total of at least 120 credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0 overall. Key requirements are broken down into three main sections: Degree Requirements, General Education Requirements, and Major Requirements.

1. B.S. Degree Requirements

  • Total Credits: Earn at least 120 credits.
  • Residency: Earn at least 30 credits in Residence at Medgar Evers College.
  • GPA: Earn a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
  • Liberal Arts and Sciences: Earn at least 60 credits of Liberal Arts and Sciences Content Courses.

2. General Education Requirements (CUNY Common Core & College Option)

These requirements cover the foundation of a liberal arts education.

  • Required Core (12 Credits):
    • English Composition: ENGL 112 and ENGL 150.
    • Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning: 1 course (e.g., MTH 115, MTH 136, or a STEM variant like MTH 141 (Finite Math), which is required for the BS/Business program).
    • Life and Physical Sciences: 1 course (e.g., BIO 101 or PHS 101).
  • Flexible Core (18 Credits – 6 Courses): Complete one course in each of the five areas, plus an additional Flexible Core course in any area.
    • World Cultures and Global Issues (e.g., ANTH 201).
    • U.S. Experience in its Diversity (e.g., HIST 200).
    • Creative Expressions (e.g., ART 100).
    • Individual and Society (e.g., ECON 212 or ECON 213 – these are also Major Requirements).
    • Scientific World (e.g., CIS 101).
  • College Option (9 Credits – 3 Courses):
    • Socio-Cultural and Diversity Cluster III: 1 course (e.g., SOC 202).
    • Integrative Knowledge Cluster IV:
      • Humanities: 1 course (e.g., ENGL 333).
      • Social & Behavioral Sciences: 1 course (e.g., HIST 300).
      • Natural Sciences & Mathematics: 1 course (e.g., ENVS 200).

3. Major Requirements

The major requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a minimum grade of C in all courses within the major, totaling at least 78 credits.

  • Required Core Courses (18 Courses):
    • Accounting: ACCT 217, ACCT 227, ACCT 311, ACCT 312, ACCT 367, ACCT 402, ACCT 406, ACCT 407, ACCT 408, ACCT 473, ACCT 477, ACCT 479, ACCT 480.
    • General Business: CIS 211, CIS 261, ECON 212, ECON 213, FIN 250, FIN 325, LAW 208, LAW 211, MAN 200, MAR 231, MTH 213.
  • Required Electives (3 Courses):
    • ACCT 401 (Internship and Accounting Software)
    • ACCT 467 (Cost Accounting II)
    • ACCT 470 (Enrolled Agent)
  • Open Electives: Earn at least 3 credits of Open Free Electives.
