Dr. Patwary is the Dean of the School of Science, Health and Technology at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Patwary taught both undergraduate and graduate level biology courses for over thirty-six years at several universities, culminating in his professorial appointment in the Biology Department of Medgar Evers College. Dr. Patwary has served in leadership roles in a number of professional organizations including faculty unions. He has completed the City University of New York Executive Leadership program, CUNY Executive Leadership Alumni Academy program, LEAP Leadership Development for Higher Education program, and the Harvard University Management Development Program. Some of the key elements of his administrative philosophy are shared governance, decision-making based on principles and policies, treating colleagues as fairly as possible, and providing proper recognition for their accomplishments.
Despite his administrative role, Dr. Patwary believes teaching is one of the most rewarding and satisfying professions a person can have. His teaching philosophy includes his belief of continuous learning and self-improvement. During the course of his career, Dr. Patwary has supervised dozens of graduate and undergraduate students, guest scientists and technical officers, as well as served as an external examiner of M.S., Ph.D. and D. Sc. Dissertations: a good number of those former students are now engaged as educators and research scientists at several prestigious institutions. In addition, he was nominated as one of the most innovative faculty members by the Medgar Evers College graduating class of 2004.
Dr. Patwary is a recipient of many awards including Fulbright Senior Specialist Award, Educational Leadership Awards, National Role Model Administrator Award, Student Appreciation Awards, Teaching Excellence Awards, Visiting Professorship Awards, Fellowship Awards and Research and Equipment Grant Awards. He has served as Editorial Committee Member of peer-reviewed journals, and reviewed both research papers for several journals and grant proposals for several organizations. He has given many research presentations, chaired international conference sessions, and participated in many national and international professional conferences. His publications include over forty full research papers published in referred research journals. He has also co-authored several text books, book chapters, invited review articles, reports and several abstracts.
Dr. Patwary obtained his bachelor degree with a combined major in Botany, Chemistry and Zoology, his master degree in Botany with specialization in Cell Biology and Genetics, and his doctorate in Biology/ with specialization in Genetics. He did his post-doctoral research in Molecular Biology/ Molecular Genetics at the National Research Council of Canada for several years. He received additional molecular biology and biotechnology training organized at Johns Hopkins University, Emory University, NSF, NIH, CSHL and NYU.
One of the most rewarding experiences Dean, Patwary has gained at Medgar Evers College by his direct involvement in planning, designing, construction, equipment and furniture procurement and occupancy process of recently constructed state-of-the art 247 million dollar science building. He has been deeply involved in developing two multimillion dollar core research facilities in this building. In addition to his responsibilities as Dean, Dr. Patwary is engaged in collaborative research with several other academics and involved in various community activities. Dr. Patwary is thankful to his wife and his daughter for their unconditional support to his professional activities. He is proud of his numerous former students, who are now well-established educators and research scholars.
