The Pinnacle Awards and Scholarship Gala showcases the tremendous value a Medgar Evers College education provides and the importance of raising funds for promising students. With faculty, staff, and students who hail from all five boroughs of New York City and around the world, Medgar Evers College is an environment rich in diversity that prepares students to become active citizens and changemakers poised to create a more equitable global society.
This year, we are focused on these distinct areas:
• The Study Abroad program provides our students with intentional educational experiences on a global scale. With academic programs in China, the Caribbean, Africa, and beyond, our students participate in first-hand cultural exchanges while advancing their studies. Once they return home, these students bring an international perspective back to our campus and inspire their fellow classmates to pursue their own experiences abroad.
• The Brooklyn Pipeline creates a pathway to college for students in New York City’s public elementary, middle, and high schools. Enrichment programs, career and leadership forums, and college readiness courses in math and science prepare young learners long before the college admissions process officially begins.
• Subsidized internships are essential real-world experiences in today’s highly competitive job market. Too often, our students must forgo unpaid internships in favor of paid employment to supplement their finances. By subsidizing internships, we give our students opportunities to explore career options and gain skills in a professional context that will continue to serve them well after graduation.
• Scholarships are a fundamental way in which we support our students. Institutional scholarships as well as grants and corporate partnerships allow our students to focus on creating bright futures as we work to lessen their financial burden.
This year, we are pleased to our honor the following Pinnacle Awards recipients:
Medgar Evers College Community Council
Incorporated in 1972 as a non-profit organization, the Community Council for Medgar Evers College was established to maintain community awareness of and continued support for the College. Its members comprise representatives from the extended community including residents, organizations, faculty, students, and local elected officials. Today, the Council participates in the selection of the College’s President, serves as an advisory body to the President and the College, and raises funds for scholarships and grants that directly benefit students. Since 1980, the Community Council has raised over $250,000 in scholarships for Medgar Evers College students.
