SUMMARY:Women’s Herstory Month Committee Presents: Dr. Nadia Lopez
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special lecture given by Dr. Nadia Lopez\, part of the 2019 Women’s Herstory Month Powwer! series. Dr. Lopez will discuss how she has beaten the odds to become an internationally recognized and pioneering educator. \nThe founding principal of Mott Hall Bridges Academy (a New York City public school in Brownsville\, Brooklyn)\, Lopez became a viral sensation after one of her students was featured on the popular blog\, Humans of New York. Millions of people around the world discovered the positive learning environment\, high expectations and growing success rate at her school\, which is located right in the middle of one of the most under-served communities in America. In 2015 a Humans of New York fundraiser raised $1.4 million to take Lopez’s students on college trips that include Harvard University\, Summer STEAM programs and college scholarships. Lopez continues to show the world how underprivileged communities can beat the odds and create positive institutions that have a global impact. \nThere will also be a special performance by the Black Diamonds\, Medgar Evers College’s step team. \nThis event is free and open to the public. No RSVP necessary. \nFor more information please contact:\nDr. Alexis Mclean: 718-270-6046 • amclean@mec.cuny.edu\nMs. Lisa Evelyn: 718-270-5155 • levelyn@mec.cuny.edu

SUMMARY:Women’s Herstory Month Committee Presents: Kalilah Wright
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Kalilah Wright\, founder and CEO of Mess in a Bottle\, part of the 2019 Women’s Herstory Month Powwer! series. Kalilah will discuss how her decision to place thought-provoking messages on apparel led to celebrity endorsements and the development of a nationally recognized brand. \nWhen Kalilah Wright left her six-figure architect job to follow her true passion of becoming an entrepreneur — crafting cool sayings on cotton T-shirts for her brand\, Mess in a Bottle — she never thought she would come face-to-face with crime. More importantly\, she never thought the city she loved and called home would be where her nightmare took place. But the root of her story stretches far beyond fashion and entrepreneurship\, its premise focuses on empowerment and having the fortitude to forge ahead when you’ve given up hope. Today\, Wright will tell anyone who listens\, the importance of being happy and living your dreams\, even when they’re interrupted by trauma. (Read more at www.teenvogue.com/story/kalilah-wright-mess-in-a-bottle-armed-robbery.) \nThis event is free and open to the public. No RSVP necessary. \nFor more information please contact:\nDr. Alexis Mclean: 718-270-6046 • amclean@mec.cuny.edu\nMs. Lisa Evelyn: 718-270-5155 • levelyn@mec.cuny.edu
