Dr. Greene and Ahanu discuss his work with Harvard University’s Hip Hop Archive and his career as an artist and scholar. They talk about his advocacy in social justice\, his creative work\, and the current state of Black theater and performance. Ahanu also reads a poem from his forthcoming book\, Shackled Freedom: Black Lives in the American South (Willow Books\, 2020). \nAbout the Guest\nDasan Ahanu is currently a visiting lecturer at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Rothwell Mellon Program Director for Creative Futures with Carolina Performing Arts. He is co-founder and managing director of Black Poetry Theatre\, a Durham-based theater company that creates and produces original poetry and spoken-word productions. Ahanu served as artist-in-residence and assistant professor of English at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh\, N.C.\, and he was the 2015-2016 Nasir Jones Fellow with the Hip Hop Archive & Research Institute at Harvard University’s Hutchins Center for African & African American Research. He is a founding member and coach of North Carolina’s Bull City Slam Team and an active participant in poetry slams who has competed regionally and nationally. He has released numerous recordings and has been featured on national radio and TV. His writing was published in the St. James Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Culture and Oxford American magazine. His plays include The People Before the Park\, about the 19th-century Black community Seneca Village that was destroyed to create Central Park. His play Pitbulls received its world premiere Off-Broadway at Rattlestick Theater\, NYC in November 2014; Safe House received its world premiere in October 2014 at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; and The Last Saint on Sugar Hill received its New York City premiere in 2013 at Dr. Barbara Ann Teer’s National Black Theater in NYC and earned six 2014 AUDELCO  nominations. His other plays include The Final Daze\, The Dangerous\, and Sugar and Needles\, among others. Adkins is also the artistic director of The New Black Fest\, an organization dedicated to new and provocative playwriting\, films\, and discussion from the African Diaspora. Beginning with the 1960s\, Wesley takes the reader on an historical journey of the playwrights\, actors\, and dramatists who informed the many iterations of the Black Theater and Black Film Movements. \nAbout the Author\nRichard Wesley’s work has been produced on stage and for screen and television. He has received the Drama Desk Award\, the NAACP Image Award\, the AUDELCO Award\, and the Castillo Award for his work in political theater. His first play\, The Black Terror\, was presented at the New York Shakespeare Festival’s Public Theater. The Mighty Gents\, another play by Wesley\, premiered on Broadway in 1978 and in the mid-1970s. Wesley wrote screenplays for Uptown Saturday Night in 1974\, Let’s Do It Again in 1975\, and Fast Forward and Native Son in 1986.
