I was raised in Central New York and became interested in the field of Composition Studies because of its emphasis on student-centered learning and its understanding of writing as socially situated. Medgar Evers College was my first choice among NYC colleges and universities; I was drawn to MEC because of its community-based and social justice mission.

As managing editor of A&U, a national nonprofit HIV/AIDS magazine, I have published over 300 articles. I have also published fiction and poetry. I have coedited an anthology, Art & Understanding: Literature from the First Twenty Years of A&U. I have presented at national conferences on composition pedagogy.
