Reverend Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN) and syndicated radio and television host, will deliver Medgar Evers College’s 48th commencement address. The ceremony begins at 9 am on Wednesday, June 5, at Barclays Center.

One of the nation’s most-renowned civil rights leaders, Reverend Sharpton’s career began at the age of four when he preached his first sermon. He has since become a powerful voice in the fight for civil rights.

Reverend Sharpton’s NAN is a not-for-profit civil rights organization, which was formed in 1991 and has more than 100 chapters nationwide. The organization includes a Washington, DC Bureau and regional offices across the U.S. Reverend Sharpton has been identified as one of the nation’s most renowned civil rights leaders, who was often praised by President Barack Obama as “the voice of the voiceless and a champion for the downtrodden.”

He also shares his views and tackles the issues through his television and radio programs. Reverend Sharpton hosts Politics Nation with Al Sharpton on MSNBC and has his own syndicated radio show, Keepin’ It Real.  Reverend Sharpton is also an established author.

Meet the Class of 2019 Associate Degree Scholar

Associate Scholar: Dawnnel Northe
Dawnnel Northe is graduating with her Associates of Arts degree in Liberal Arts, with a concentration in Social and Behavioral Science. A first-generation college student, Dawnnel attended school full-time while tutoring middle school students part-time. With the support of faculty, staff, and the ASAP program, Dawnnel consistently made the Dean’s List, successfully completed the CUNY Service Corps program, and worked with the Adult Learning Program at City Tech.

Meet the Class of 2019 Valedictorian

Valedictorian: Luan Emilaire
Luan Emilaire is graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Accounting, one year after being honored as Associate Degree Scholar in 2018. She was born and raised in Saint Lucia and moved to New York with her mother and siblings in 1995. Luan is a member of the Alpha Beta Kappa Honor Society, National Association of Black Accountants, The National Society of Leadership and Success and a volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs at Medgar Evers College.

Guest

For priority seating, guests should begin to arrive at 8:00 AM. Due to occupancy limits and fire code regulations, infants and children cannot attend without a ticket of their own. Guests should enter at the 620 Atlantic Avenue entrance. Family members and guests should be seated in the Barclays Center no later than 9:00 AM. Anyone arriving after 9:00 AM will not be allowed to enter until after the graduates have been seated. Please be aware that if you leave the Center, you will not be permitted to reenter. The Ceremony and Procession will begin promptly at 9:00 AM and will be approximately three hours.

Commencement Etiquette

The ceremony will be approximately 3 hours. You must stay for the entire event. Once the procession has begun, you may not leave the center. Cell phone usage is not permitted in the Barclays Center. The College will not be responsible for any personal belongings (i.e., bags, strollers, umbrellas, and other miscellaneous items).

ALL GRADUATES MUST REMAIN UNTIL THE END OF THE CEREMONY!

Post Ceremony Activities

After the ceremony, all graduates and their guests will be directed to the nearest exit depending on their seating location. Please plan to meet family and friends at a pre-arranged location after the ceremony.
