Cristal Munoz Valedictorian Graduate 2020

The City University of New York (CUNY) is quite a large system. What was it about Medgar Evers College (MEC) that made you enroll here?
Before I began my college journey, I knew that I wanted to major in business. And Medgar Evers College has one of the best Business departments in the CUNY system. MEC is also a melting pot filled with diverse students, and that was one of the things that I was looking for in a college.

What advice would you give to incoming students?
My advice to incoming students is to stay focused. Life can throw many curve balls without any warning, at any given time. Be prepared. There will be hurdles and troubles along the way, but they will be manageable. Time management is vital when doing assignments and studying while juggling life. Also, procrastination is not your best friend! Always stay ahead of due dates and complete assignments beforehand so that you have time to revise them, and submit your best work.

During your time at MEC, how did you manage to overcome the challenges that arose in your academic and personal lives?
I overcame the challenges that arose by remembering that behind every dark storm is a bright rainbow. I didn’t focus on what I couldn’t control; I focused on what I could, which was my grades. I set aside any personal problems and made college my top priority. When I faced challenges with classes and assignments, the most appropriate (and first move), was approaching my professor and sharing my concerns with them. That was the best advice I got before I entered college, and it was the advice I used throughout my four years.

What is your favorite MEC memory?
My favorite MEC memories are tied to our annual Club Fair, the block party hosted outside-on Crown between Bedford and Franklin. I enjoyed every Club Fair because it was an event that almost every student would participate in. The music, the food, and the activities were terrific. And so was the atmosphere, which was filled with positive energy and vibes. I attended every annual Club Fair because each year they were different and unique.

Who or what has been an invaluable part of your journey at MEC (both within and outside the institution)?
My most significant support systems were the Percy E. Sutton SEEK Program at Medgar Evers College and my family. The SEEK program offered resources for me, such as tutoring and academic advisement. With the help of SEEK, I obtained an internship with a telecommunications company and won a $5,000 scholarship. My family kept me motivated and reminded me that I could do anything that I put my mind to. Having their support kept me concentrated on my goals and motivated during every semester.

Due to COVID-19, the Class of 2020 was thrust into one of the world’s most historical periods in time. What is your message to fellow graduates?
My message to fellow graduates is to use the same drive and focus that guided you through each academic year in the real world after you graduate. Things are tough right now and will be for a while, but we will get through this as long as we push through the obstacles. Remind yourself of your goals and dreams, and never stop working and thriving until you complete them.

The City University of New York (CUNY) is quite a large system. What was it about Medgar Evers College (MEC) that made you enroll here?
I made the decision to attend Medgar Evers College a long time ago; subconsciously. My dream has and will always be to further myself and my studies. As a young child, my older sister who had migrated to New York, would speak of her studies at Medgar Evers College. So when I moved here and had the opportunity to pursue my education, the fact that Medgar Evers College was a 10-minute walk from home and offering the courses that I was interested in, seemed like a perfect fit.

What advice would you give to incoming students?
My advice to incoming students would be to seize the moment! And to be fully present and proactive in their journey. There may be hard times, but do not give up because this is also the opportunity to evolve into the best version of yourself.

During your time at MEC, how did you manage to overcome the challenges that arose in your academic and personal lives?
During my time at MEC, I managed to overcome challenges such as being a single mother to two young sons; financial struggles; homelessness; medical issues, and surgeries; by praying and remaining steadfast. I remembered my purpose and that I was in fact, initializing the solution. I also sought out as much help and resources as I could, as giving up was not an option. I kept on believing that I was able and that God had brought me thus far and He would take me through!

What is your favorite MEC memory?
I am happy about the fact that I have created many fond memories at MEC. Memories of the people I have met and the experiences I’ve had, live on in my heart. One outstanding moment was representing MEC at the global CFA research challenge and subsequently winning the Heloise Ham scholarship and Distinguished Scholar Award; their highest honor.

Who or what has been an invaluable part of your journey at MEC (both within and outside the institution)?
The support of family members, friends, and coworkers were invaluable parts of my journey. I had many struggles, so their assistance and words of kindness and encouragement were like glue in the times when I was falling apart. I am also thankful to the faculty and staff of MEC who went out of their way to show me I mattered. As a student, the collective is instrumental and an invaluable part of my achievements!

Due to COVID-19, the Class of 2020 was thrust into one of the world’s most historical periods in time. What is your message to fellow graduates?
Hang in there, we shall overcome! Stay steadfast and stay ready, because after we have rode out these hard times, we need to be in alignment for the upswing!
