Keynote Speaker

Deval Patrick
First Black Governor of Massachusetts

Deval Patrick served two terms as the 71st governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, from 2007 to 2015. He is the first and only African-American to be elected to that position, and only the second African American governor in the United States.

The first member in his family to attend college, he graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 1978. After receiving a Rockefeller Scholarship, Patrick traveled to Africa on a United Nations development project in Sudan before returning to the states to attend Harvard Law School, graduating with honors. In 1994, President Bill Clinton appointed Patrick to the nation’s top civil-rights post, assistant attorney general for civil rights in the U.S. Department of Justice.

In office as mayor, he pushed for legislation to limit the purchase of firearms, committed a historic amount of public funds to Massachusetts schools, protected the state’s first-in-the-nation same-sex marriage allowance, and created the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Patrick currently serves as a Managing Director of Bain Capital Double Impact, where he focuses on investments that deliver both a competitive financial return and significant positive social impact. He is the author of two books, A Reason to Believe: Lessons from an Improbable Life and Faith in the Dream: A Call to the Nation to Reclaim American Values.
