Transforming & Innovative Practices
Transforming & Innovative Practices in STEM Education (TIPS) started in 2018 as a collaborative project between the School of Education and the School of Science, Health and Technology, specifically the Biology Department. The program’s primary goal is to recruit STEM majors who are interested in becoming urban teachers. TIPS provides program participants with service learning in real classrooms, mentorship by Education and STEM faculty, and STEM education professional development from field-based partners. The TIPS project has implications for teacher preparation, particularly for predominantly Black and Latina/o institutions with a critical mass of STEM majors of color who can potentially address the nation-wide shortage of teachers of color. With grant support from the VOYA Foundation TIPS offers fully funded minor in Urban Education for STEM majors. TIPS participants also receive a stipend, and may have the opportunity to present a research conferences with the program directors.
