Graduate School Tours:
PBI Campus Tours are held once during the academic year and encourage you to visit the PBI office when considering graduate school. Most admissions offices offer open houses, opportunities to sit in on classes, meet with alumni and much more. You can find this information on the admissions page of any graduate school’s web site. Graduate school is a big investment and you will spend anywhere from one to three years at the school, so be sure to spend time learning about the culture, talking to students and figuring out if this school is a good fit for you. Also, your campus visit will provide you with more insight about the school, which will ultimately help you to write a more meaningful essay about your interest in the program.
SUNY @ Old Westbury – Fall 2019 – Wed, Nov 20th, 2019
Spending time on campus can be an important part of the graduate school selection process. Several Medgar Evers College students who are considering graduate school toured the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury campus to learn more about that school. The Office of Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) organized the tour, which took place November 20. Twenty-eight students toured the SUNY Old Westbury campus, met with faculty and staff from the University’s Graduate Center, and discussed how to apply to the University’s many graduate programs.
They also discussed the overall application process for graduate schools, the required documentations, and the importance of recommendation letters, the application timeline, and deadlines. MEC students were advised on faculty-student communication and relationships, and networked with graduate admission staff and faculty who served as panelists.
Stony Brook Spring 2019
Visiting different college campuses can be helpful in the search for the right graduate school program. Several Medgar Evers College students began that search with a graduate school tour of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook University. Organized by the Office of Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI), 27 MEC students toured the campus on April 11 and met with staff from the University’s Graduate Center for Inclusive Education (CIE). CIE is a program that promotes an environment that fosters diversity and inclusion at the highest levels of research and scholarship.
Staff from the program reviewed how to apply for the University’s graduate programs and be part of the CIE. They also discussed the overall application process for graduate schools, the required documentations, and the importance of recommendation letters, the application timeline, and deadlines. MEC students were advised on faculty-student communication and relationships, Fulbright Scholar Program, and networked with graduate students and faculty who served as panelists.
