Medgar Evers College encourages all interested students to have an international experience during their undergraduate studies. The Study Abroad Office is here to provide you with the resources to help you plan an experience.
In general, a study abroad experience can be short term from 3 weeks during January Intersession to 4 weeks during the summer or long term which is a full semester. Imagine yourself on a one-week study tour in the Dominican Republic or three weeks in Jamaica, or maybe an entire semester in France or Brazil. Such an international experience could be with a MEC or CUNY faculty member or in cooperation with a colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad. There are many possibilities for both short term and semester aboard experiences in regard to country, language, major and costs. The many choices of study abroad programs will enhance students undergraduate education and give a global perspective. Study abroad opportunities are open to all students who are eligible.
Due to advances in technology & communications partnered with increased mobility of populations, we now truly operate in a global community. In every realm there is high demand for workers with international experience and global sensitivity. As such, in 1990 the U.S. government sought to have 10% of all U.S. undergraduates participating in study abroad programs. According to the Institute of International Education (2008), the number of U.S. students studying abroad increased by 8% during the 2006 – 2007 school year.
While the internet and newer forms of technology have given students unlimited access to the world, true understanding of other cultures and languages can only be acquired through study abroad. With international experience you will become a leader in your field.
