The General Educational Development Center (GEDC) is located at Medgar Evers College , 1150 Carroll Street , Rm. 111A, Brooklyn , New York , 11225 . The Center has been involved in Literacy for over thirteen (13) years and is geared toward serving the educational needs of the people in the Brooklyn community and its environs.
The goals of GEDC are to increase the enrollment of students in higher education and to prepare students to take and pass the General Equivalency Diploma exam by providing academic preparation and basic skill development in five (5) subject areas of the GED. In addition, the Center provides a variety of workshops that allow the students to build their skills and confidence.
SERVICES
The Center provides classes in Adult Basic Education (ABE) / Literacy; English as a Second Language (ESOL); Pre-GED and GED. Participants receive instructions three evenings per week, 6:00 pm-9:20 pm at W.E.B. DuBois High School , located at 402 Eastern Parkway and Bedford Avenue , Brooklyn New York .
The program is divided into cycles and each cycle runs for approximately12 weeks or 96 instructional hours. Classes include:
ABE / Literacy
The Basic Education classes are conducted Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 pm to 9 pm. It consists of Levels 2 & 3. This population is comprised of adults who lack sufficient mastery of basic educational skills to enable them to function effectively.
ESOL
The ESL Program reflects a content-based approach to language learning taught via communicative, task-based classroom activities. Level-appropriate materials are selected, themes are explored and activities are conducted in a student-centered way that relates the course content to the students' lives, increasing the depth of student engagement with their English language studies.
Pre-GED / GED
The GED and Pre-GED classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6pm to 9pm. It caters to males and females who need to attain a high school diploma. Instruction covers Mathematics, Reading , Social Studies, Science and Writing.
TESTING CENTER
The Medgar Evers College Testing Center administers GED exams on a monthly basis. It is located at 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, 11225.
