Dean’s Welcome:
Welcome to the website site of the School of Science, Health and Technology (SSH&T). Our school enrolls about 42% of the students in the college. As the Dean, I am honored to lead the largest school of the college since September 2004. The SSH&T consists of the Department of Biology, Mathematics, Nursing, and Physical, Environmental and Computer Sciences. We offer Baccalaureate degrees in Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics and Nursing, and Associate degrees in Science and Computer Science and a Certificate degree in Practical Nursing. The School offers special Transfer Opportunities into Allied Health and Early Medical Education programs at SUNY/Downstate through articulation agreements.
The school provides access and opportunities for high quality, professional, and career-oriented undergraduate science education and research for students of diverse background. It aims to increase the participation of minority students in health sciences and other STEM areas. Congruent with the mission of the college to offer and maintain high quality undergraduate programs, the college has built a $247 million, 195,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art science and health building with smart classrooms, teaching labs, computer labs, and research modules. The school has developed multi-million dollar research capacity including two core research facilities in the areas of cellular-molecular biology and chemical analysis. These facilities will contribute significantly towards fulfilling the mission and goals of this mostly minority-serving institution to prepare its students for careers in the sciences and health sciences.
The year 2011 is the end of our school’s five-year plan that marks significant growth in a number of critical areas including increase in student enrollment by over 38%, increase in multiple headcount of students taking science courses by 48%, and increase in faculty grantsmanship by 50%. We have hired 23 full time faculty. Our faculty have received such prestigious honors as the Fulbright Senior Specialist Award and the American Cancer Society Award. We have engaged our faculty and alumni in SSH&T’s various programs such as, Student Research Competition, Black Health Issues Seminars, Women in Science and Math Seminars, and the Dean’s Honor List Award & Annual Award Reception.
Our students have made many research poster presentations in various conferences and won prizes for their work. We have continued promoting academic and professional success of our students “one student at a time” through a supportive network, which includes tutoring, topical workshops, individualized pre-professional advising, research internships, volunteer experience placements, invited lectures, faculty mentoring and student club activities.
To strengthen our teaching, research and student mentoring capacity, our school plans to hire 25 to 30 full time faculty, two core facility managers and an internship placement coordinator during next three to five year period. The School aims to extend its degree offerings to include additional career-oriented programs in the allied health areas that have high employment prospects. The school is committed to providing in-house research experiences to the majority of our undergraduate students that would aid to their critical thinking ability and analytical skills, and make them better competitive in their pursuit of graduate and professional school admission.
