Answer 1
Medgar Evers College has established an articulation agreement with SUNY Downstate/College of Health Related Professions (SUNY/CHRP) to facilitate the transfer of qualified MEC students into four Allied Health degree programs:

  • Physical Therapy (B.S./M.S.)
  • Physician Assistant (B.S.)
  • Occupational Therapy (M.S.)
  • Diagnostic Medical Imaging (B.S.)

Advantages to being part of the articulation agreement
Preferred Acceptance
Students increase their chances of being accepted into the SUNY/CHRP degree programs by participating in the Articulation Agreement.
MEC students are given preferred acceptance into these SUNY/CHRP programs after successfully completing a prescribed course of study at MEC and meeting the other Downstate admission requirements.

Enriched Academic/Career Counseling
Students who are part of the program are entitled to enriched academic and career counseling into these Allied Health areas.

Dr. Ebere Nduka is the Biology Department's Allied Health Counselor and MEC Coordinator for the SUNY/CHRP Articulation Agreement. Other members of the biology department pre-professional advisement committee will also provide guidance for the students who are interested in pursuing careers in these allied health professions.

Dr. Ebere Nduka as well as the members of the pre=professional advisement committee will provide the personalized academic advisement needed to meet SUNY/CHRP admissions requirements, in addition to helping students with application forms, writing the necessary letters of recommendation, arranging for volunteer work experience and preparing for interviews.

Answer 2
Special Features of the Program
Career Seminars
SUNY/CHRP Department chairpersons and faculty participate in career seminars offered yearly at Medgar Evers College.
Summer Shadowing

The articulation agreement arranges for a small number of outstanding MEC students to participate in a Summer Educational Shadowing Program at SUNY/CHRP. This is a one week program in June that allows MEC students to join Downstate students as they take classes in Human Gross Anatomy (lab and lecture), palpation classes and other courses in their individual area of study.
CSTEP

Science majors interested in these careers are also eligible to join the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP). This program is funded through a grant from the NYS Education Department and is designed to increase the number of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged undergraduate students who successfully complete pre-professional education programs of study that lead to careers in Biology, Applied Biology, Medical and Paramedical fields. CSTEP provides students with special courses, enrichment activities, tutoring services and opportunities for travel and paid research internships. Students interested in participating in the CSTEP should contact Dr. Edward Catapane, Program Director.

Students re required to make an appointment to meet with the MEC Coordinator for the SUNY/CHRP Articulation Agreement, Dr. Ebere Nduka, (718) 270-6211, for advisement and counseling before applying for admission to SUNY/CHRP. Dr. Ebere Nduka is located in Room C-303C and can be reached by email at msayed@mec.cuny.edu. Students can also leave a written message in his mailbox in the biology department.
