Our Departments

Biology

The Department of Biology offers courses, which are designed for the student who wishes to pursue a career in biology and biology-related fields as well as for the student who desires some general knowledge of biology. The Department also offers courses to meet the degree requirements of programs in other departments of the College.

Chemistry and Environmental Science

The Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science (CES) is housed in the School of Science Health and Technology (SSH&T), on the fifth floor of the new state-of-the-art science building. The CES department offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science and provides courses in Chemistry and Environmental Science to satisfy the requirements for Associate and Baccalaureate degrees in other departments.

The rigor of our program, in particular its strength in mathematics and science, enables our students to gain ready acceptance into graduate programs nationwide. Several graduates of our Environmental Science Program are presently enrolled in graduate programs in environmental health, environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, earth and atmospheric sciences and a number of related fields at several of the nation’s leading institutions.

Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics provides an engaging and intellectually rigorous curriculum that seeks to assist students in preparing for a career in which mathematics is directly or indirectly involved and to foster an appreciation of the vital role of mathematics in society.  In all our courses we encourage critical thinking and emphasize problem solving. Students thereby acquire and strengthen essential skills for their science and liberal arts courses.

Nursing

Nursing is intellectually stimulating, challenging and provides many opportunities for specialization and advancement. Whether it is caring for clients in a hospital, the community, working with the elderly or children, engaging in research to improve health care, teaching clients and/or students, or using advanced technology to improve health care systems, nursing is a fulfilling vocation. These opportunities are just a few avenues one can pursue in a nursing career. Medgar Evers College can help individuals to become a nurse, or to continue to climb the career by pursuing education in nursing to the BSN level.

The department promotes success in a nursing career by assessing the readiness of its graduates throughout the educational experience. It is our goal to ensure that our graduates achieve success, employ their skills and technology to enrich their community, our nation and the world. We support lifelong learning and embrace career mobility.
