Department of Computer Information Systems
The mission of the Department of Computer Information Systems is to prepare future professionals who use information technologies to develop systems that meet the needs of: government; nonprofit; and business and industry. Specifically, they are endowed with the ability to take overall responsibility for managing information systems and computing resources for an entire organization.
Medgar Evers College offers four (4) options to pursue a program of study in Computer Information Systems: bachelor degree, associate degree; area of emphasis or minor.
The first, is the B.S. in Computer Information Systems is a 120 credit hour program that prepares professionals to use information technologies and develop systems that meet business and management needs. Students choose between two concentrations:
- Systems Analysis and Design; or
- Network Systems Management.
The second option is the B.S. in Business with an emphasis in CIS. Under advisement with faculty and advisors, students may choose five (5) courses (15 credits) above the business core requirements in computer information systems.
The third option is the Associates in Applied Science (AAS) in Computer Applications, which is a 60 credit hour program that prepares students to be effective computer users who combine computers with analytical sciences and business skills. It also provides students with sufficient education to continue studies toward a bachelors degree.
Lastly, with advisement from the proper faculty and advisors, students outside of the CIS major may choose between two (2) minors:
Minor in Multimedia & Web Technologies, in which students learn digital photo design and editing, animation, digital audit, digital video, web design, internet security and much more using Photoshop, Dream Weaver, Shoundbooth, Premiere, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash and other relevant software applications. Students must complete the following four (4) courses or 12 credits:
- CIS 310 Computer Graphics
- CIS 313 Digital Media
- CIS 320 Fundamentals of E-Commerce
- CIS 413 Internet & Emerging Technologies
Minor in Computer Information Systems, in which students must complete 15 to 16 credits:
- CIS 232 Introduction to Programming (JAVA)
- CIS 225 Foundations of CIS Using C++
- CIS 300 Data Structures for Business Apps
