Dear Medgar Evers College Family:
I’d like to offer my most sincere gratitude for your support of the State of the College address, last week. I hope that I was able to give you additional insight into my vision for the future of this great institution. We have to think globally as we work to educate and prepare our young people for a rapidly evolving world. One in which their professional competition has long-since ceased to be merely those in their own cities or even this country. We have to make these young people think bigger – about the global possibilities that await them.
In the weeks ahead, I’ll spend more time moving towards execution of the plan I’ve set forth (see link below). I’ll also spend more time outlining what this will mean for the surrounding community because it, too, will be vital to the future of this institution. I believe deeply in the value of education – at all levels – and I take the responsibility of this role very seriously. The significance of Medgar Evers’s legacy also weighs very heavily on my heart and mind as I go about this work. He was a man of great character and strength and in an institution with so many children of color; I believe it’s imperative that we remind this generation of what he stood for.
I’ve had the opportunity to speak with several students in recent weeks and each of them have expressed a deep desire to make Medgar Evers College a place they can be proud to call their alma mater. They know what’s happening at other institutions and they want to know how we can make some of those same things possible here. Through hard work and collaboration, I believe it can all happen – a more robust academic program, well-defined and supported career pathways, additional internship opportunities, a healthy roster of student activities and more. In one of the greatest, most innovative cities in the world, there is no reason to believe otherwise.
I’m optimistic about the future. There are good people in this community and they are eager for change. I share their sentiment and I look forward to working with you as we address a myriad of issues that we’ll need to tackle to turn things around. For those of you who were unable to attend the State of the College address, I invite you to take a look at the video of the event below. There, you will also find the PowerPoint presentation that was used during my remarks. It gives a brief outline of what I hope to accomplish in the months and years ahead. Is it ambitious? Yes. Is it possible? Absolutely.
I’m humbled by the opportunity to lead this college to greater heights and I thank you for your kind words and offers of support since my arrival.
