What nursing programs does Medgar Evers College (MEC) offer?
MEC offers a Practical Nursing (PN), an Associate Degree in Nursing (RN) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
How long are the nursing programs?
The Practical Nursing program is 18 months \3 semesters; the Registered Nursing program is two years; the Bachelor in Science of nursing program is 2 years (2 additional years after the Registered Nursing program)
Can I apply to take the Practical Nursing program in the evening?
No, the Practical Nursing program’s courses are scheduled Mon-Fri between 9am and 5pm.
When can I apply for the Practical Nursing program?
The application filing period for the Practical Nursing admission is held every fall semester. The Practical Nursing program commences once yearly (every spring semester).
Can I apply directly to the Practical Nursing program if I am not a MEC student?
No. All applicants must have current student status at MEC prior to taking the NLN and filing an application for admission into the Practical Nursing program.
What are the prerequisite courses and how long are they?
There are no prerequisite courses for the Practical Nursing program, however prospective applicants who have taken liberal arts and science courses must achieve at least a 2.7 overall GPA with a minimum grade of “ C “ in ENGL 112, and “ B- “ in BIO 104, or BIO 150/ BIO 151 or BIO 251.
Is there an entrance exam to get into the Practical Nursing program?
Yes, prospective applicants must take the National League of Nursing (NLN) pre-entrance exam (PAX). The NLN–PN pre-entrance exam is usually administered in the fall semester in order to meet the spring semester program commencement date.
How do I apply to the Practical Nursing program?
Prospective applicants must contact the Student Advocacy and Support Services (SASS) to seek advisement and determine eligibility. All eligible applicants can then register for the NLN-PN exam. The SASS center phone number is: 718-270-5170
Is there a waiting list for the Practical Nursing program?
No. Prospective applicants must apply and complete the NLN-PN each year they seek admissions into the Practical Nursing program. However science courses are good for five years. Applicants that were not successful with their first attempt may reapply in the fall application period each year.
Is there a bridge agreement from the Practical Nursing program to the Associates Registered Nursing program?
No, currently both Practical Nursing and registered nursing programs are generic. Prospective applicants must meet admission criteria outlined for each program.
Can I be re-admitted in the clinical phase?
No. If you were already a Medgar Evers College student, you may re-admit to the College through the Office of Admissions. Once re-accepted to the College, you must Contact the Nursing Department to file an appeal for re-admission to the clinical phase.
Can I apply directly to the Nursing program?
No. All students applying to the Nursing program must have current student status at Medgar Evers College.
Is there a pre-entrance exam to get into either program?
Yes. Once students apply to the program, they are scheduled to take the National League of Nursing (NLN) pre-entrance exam (PAX). The NLN-PN pre-entrance exam is given in the Fall semester and the NLN-RN pre-entrance exam is given in the Spring semester.
Where do I sign up to take the pre-entrance exam?
Students must Contact the Student Advocacy & Support Services (SASS) Center to seek counseling, determine eligibility and to sign-up for the exam.
Do you have LPN to RN or to BSN pathway programs?
No. At this time, Medgar Evers College only has three separate programs PN, RN, BSN. Pathway programs are currently under development.
What are prerequisite courses and how long are they?
Pre-requisite courses are courses required prior to admittance into the program. They take at least one semester (15 Weeks) to complete.
What is the process if I have already taken my pre-requisite courses?
Complete a transfer application selecting Medgar Evers College as one of your choices. Once accepted and enrolled, you will need to take the remaining pre-requisite courses, if applicable then apply to next available
If apply to the program one year and do not get in can I apply the following year?
Yes. However, science courses are only good for (5) years.
Can I apply to the RN program while taking any pre-requisite courses?
No. courses must be completed at the time of application. For example, for the Spring 2013 admission process to enter in the Fall 2013 semester you cannot be enrolled in Bio 251 in the Spring 2013, this course must be completed prior to the Spring 2013 admission process.
Can I apply to the program if I receive a “C” grade in a science course?
No. Students must have a B- or better in all science courses. If you have earned a C or lower grade, you must retake the course and earn a B- grade or better
Can I take a science course twice if the first grade was not satisfactory?
If I take a science course twice which grade will you accept?
While the highest grade is taken for eligibility purposes, all grades are reviewed.
What the New York State Licensing examination (NCLEX) pass/success rate?
Over the past three years 93-100 % of our students have passed the NCLEX.
How many seats do you have in your clinical registered nursing program?
Licensed Practical Nursing-varies, Registered Nursing-80, BS Nursing-varies
What criteria must I meet to enter the BSN completion program?
Must be a Registered Nurse in the state of New York; must have a physical completed by a physician. Candidate should also show immunity, recent vaccination or show absence for the following as relevant: Varicella, Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, DT Booster and Tuberculosis.
How long is the program?
The BSN completion may be done over a minimum of 4 regular semesters (2 years), but will be based on the students pace and starting credits (or transferable credits)
What are the hours of the RN-BSN program?
The class hours for the BSN completion program is primarily evenings and weekends.
When do I apply for the BSN program?
Students may apply for the BSN Completion program in any semester provided they have the required prerequisites. Application dates are consistent with Medgar Evers registration dates for each semester.
Can I apply directly to the BSN program?
You may apply through the regular Medgar Evers application process and declare that your course of study will be Nursing BSN completion program through admissions.
