Network Overview
In an effort to formalize and maintain meaningful relationships with local community school districts, business,
religious and cultural institutions, Medgar Evers College formed The Learning Community Network.
The Network provides a means to address the critical
issues confronting urban education today. During its initial year
(1999-2000), the Network instituted a breakfast series to maximize
cooperation and collaboration among Network members and to identify
effective strategies to improve teaching and learning at all levels
of education, elementary-higher education. the Network examined
the history and origin of various problems, which hinder the improvement
of student achievement, preparation and retention of qualified teachers,
and parent involvement.
One of the first guest speakers was Vice Chancellor of the Board of Regents, Dr. Adelaide Sanford. She challenged the
Network members to do more than examine urban education problems, but to become catalyst for changing the existing
conditions perpetuating the problems.
In subsequent years, the Network activities have
included the continuance of the monthly breakfast series, with a
focus on highlighting programs and schools that are overcoming obstacles
and helping students to achieve success. Some notable activities
are The Annual Best Practices Fair and Midwinter Recess Professional
Development for New Teachers.
