BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE AND THE ENVIRONMENT (BASE)

Overview

In September 2003, the Brooklyn Academy of Science & the Environment (BASE) opened its doors to 125 ninth graders; its graduating class of 2007.

Each year, BASE will add another grade. By September 2006, BASE will house a maximum of 500 students in grades 9-12. BASE is one of two New Vision High School located in the Prospect Heights Campus building, 883 Classon Avenue.

The New Vision Initiative is part of a $30 million project established by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and The Open Society Institute to transform high school education throughout the nation. BASE is a partnership between New York City Department of Education Region 6, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Prospect Park. Medgar Evers College and Brooklyn Museum of Art provide additional resources.

The mission of BASE is to create an active learning community that addresses the needs of young people while embracing environmental science and urban ecology.

BASE uses the resources of the three campuses (Park, Garden, and Prospect Heights Campus) to create teaching and learning experiences that are engaging, academically rigorous and personally meaningful to all students, their parents, faculty, collaborating community organizations and the wider community.
