Friday, October 12, 2012 To the Medgar Evers College Community, When Medgar Evers College opened its doors in 1970, it was a vibrant, productive, responsive, and lively academic community. Nearly 45 years later, the legacy of Medgar Evers, the man, continues to be expressed through the education of students and service to the community. We are also proud of the legacy of Medgar Evers College, which for four-plus decades, has met the needs of its changing community, and provided a quality education to students from communities of color, many of whom are first-generation college students. These students now proudly serve in their communities, locally and globally as professionals and leaders in their chosen disciplines. However, we must now take an objective look from both an educational as well as socio-economic perspective at the needs of a changing world, the needs of our changing community, and their impact on how we will meet the needs of our students and the community we serve. In developing the Strategic Plan, we took an in-depth and realistic look at internal and external environments, including educational programs and services, our college environment, our bricks-and-mortar footprint and technological infrastructure, and the financial growth and advancement of our College. Most importantly, we took a hard look and reaffirmed our commitment to renewing and maintaining our College’s mission and reason for its existence – the education of our students and the enhancement of a positive environment for contributing to the educational mission of the College. We are ready to move ahead and raise the bar! This Strategic Plan was developed with the conviction to align immediate goals to the ‘Medgar Mission’, to enhance the education of our students and the academic endeavors of faculty, to re-invigorate and re-engage our stakeholders, and to utilize our resources more effectively. We have identified five Goals, around which Strategic Initiatives have been developed, that will assist us to move confidently and effectively ahead:
The Goals and Strategic Initiatives of our institutional Strategic Plan will focus our efforts at the unit and area levels on the activities and resources that need to be brought to bear by the College, to build and to realize its vision for the future and strategies to promote academic excellence, to prepare students to meet a technologically advanced workforce, to support campus of innovation and continuity, and to meet external accountability measures. As I mentioned in my State-of-the-College Address on September 10, there will be a period of public comment where you will have an opportunity to give your feedback and suggestions on the DRAFT Plan. Interested individuals are invited to submit additional facts or considerations that would assist in the implementation of a coordinated strategic plan for Medgar Evers College. Comments should be captioned ISPC Plan 2012 and should be sent to ispccomments@mec.cuny.edu on or before Friday, October 9, 2012. This document is a source of pride of accomplishment for the 39 committee members who worked diligently during the past year to bring it to life. We acknowledge their work with deep gratitude. Yours in service, Dr. William L. Pollard |
