The mission of the Office of Film, Television and Radio is to train today’s students to compete in tomorrow’s workplace.
Medgar Evers College students gain hands-on studio training and field experience in film and television production through the Office of Film, Television and Radio (“OFTR”). The television studio is a professional three camera component Beta-SP format, black-box production facility, measuring 23’ 3" L x 19’ 9" W x 15’ H" and includes a Final Cut Pro and Avid – editing suite. The studio has analog and digital image gathering capability and both linear and non-linear editing capacity. It broadcasts four hours of original programming weekly over BCAT.
Students gain practical experience working on original student and faculty produced programs such as “MEC-Live” and “Unlimited,” and covering various college-wide events such as graduation and the Presidential Lecture Series. The studio is presently in pre-production on a children’s program.
The radio station has one control room, a mixing suite and a broadcast room. The station streams 28 hours of original student programming over BCAT. Students can take academic classes in radio production and work as interns on commercial radio stations such as WWRL1600 and WLIB.
OFTR has also established relationships with numerous entertainment companies that are providing paid and unpaid internships and full-time employment positions. Present corporate and union partners include the Motion Pictures Editors Guild, Teamsters Local 52, Steiner Studios, Entertainment Partners, Axium International and the News Corporation.
