CUNYSTART

CUNY Start is an intensive program at Medgar Evers College for first year students who are required to take developmental courses in Writing, Reading, and/or Math. The program allows students to address their developmental courses without using their financial aid, and assist students to enroll into credits courses sooner and stronger. To enroll into the CUNY Start program, students must attend a registration session.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

To help students prepare for success in and beyond college, CUNY Start provides intensive instruction in academic reading/writing, math, and college readiness. We also offer personalized advisement to help student overcome challenges and reach their academic goals. The program enrolls Highschool and TASC graduates who have been accepted into MEC but may need extra support to prepare for college-level work based on their CUNY Assessment Test scores. In addition, students who complete the program receive prioritized enrollment in the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP)

ELIGIBILITY

Accepted into Medgar Evers College for the current semester

  • Taken the CUNY Assessment exams, and have a developmental need in at least Writing and Math, or Math only

  • Ability to commit to a full-time program, Monday-Friday, 25 hours a week or a Part- Time program, Monday- Thursday, 20 hours a week for a semester long

  • New Freshman or continuing student with 12 or fewer completed credits

COURSE DESCRIPTION
  • Pre-College Math: Pre-College Math focuses in-depth on pre-algebra and algebra topics in an interactive and supportive learning environment.

  • Academic Reading/Writing: This class helps students strengthen skills in argumentative and analytic writing, and college-level reading.

  • College Readiness: This weekly workshop teaches students about college systems and campus resources, educational requirements related to one’s career goals, and strategies for success in and beyond college.

Bio: As a CUNY Alumnus, and minority, I understand the importance of having programs like CUNY Start where students need hands on assistance in enrolling and completing their academic careers successfully. I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management and Finance from Brooklyn College, and a Master’s of Science Degree in Urban Affairs from Hunter College.

Bio:  After Six years in education, it is in my belief that through education, students will be able to build a foundation of skills that will allow that student to be successful in and out of the classroom. Obtaining my B.A. in Organizational Management and M.B.A. in Human Resources Management, I will continue to help teach those foundational skills and habits to CUNY Start MEC students in the hopes that they succeed in the classroom and in their life.

Bio:  My time in Higher Education and working in Community Based Organizations instilled a desire to work with a diverse student population such as first generation, international and ELL college students. CUNY Start has allowed me to provide holistic academic and advisement services to first year college students at Medgar Evers College. It is very important for me to work in a position that allows me to work with a diverse group of students, and to be part of a creative team. I earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology, and a Master of Science Education in Mental Health Counseling.
