Sisters Having an Excellent Definite Strategy (S.H.A.D.E.S.). Founder Professor Safiya Bandele & Founding Members of the First Women Organization at Medgar Evers College (MEC) in 2006. Together we made a difference. Together we made an impact on the lives of our S.H.A.D.E.S little sisters. Together we became our Sisters Reflection. Many of our S.H.A.D.E.S Sisters have graduated from MEC with their AS/BA Degrees and are exploring the limits of the sky. Photography credit goes to Akeem Reelz.


S.H.A.D.E.S. is a student club for women who are smart, focused, and on the right path to success. Founded in 2006 by Professor Safiya Bandele and founding student members Phoenix L. Brooks, Marie Antoine-Pierre, GenIsis, and Shanti Vincent. S.H.A.D.E.S. was the first women’s organization at Medgar Evers College.


To prepare women for academic, personal and professional leadership. Along with Center for Women’s Development (CWD), be the driving force behind the CWD’s programming and the leading authority on the needs of the women at MEC and the community.


Our primary goals are:

1. Sisterhood
     a. Coming together with women from diverse backgrounds to learn from and teach one another.
     b. Learning the art of interpersonal relationships among women.
     c. Having a shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen in difficult times.

2. Academia
     a. Tutoring assistance.
     b. Scholarship opportunities

3. Preparation for the Real World

     c. Career planning
