One of these is the Center for Women's Development which assists students through counseling and programming to deal with many of the life personal issues that negatively impact your successful pursuit of the degree. The Center for Women’s Development

 

MISSION

The mission of the Center for Women’s Development is to provide direct services, support and programming for women students by:

  1. Offering specialized services that support personal development

  2. Assist students to address issues affecting self-actualization and quality of life

  3. Actively engaging the college, university and community in proactively addressing issues faced by women students ,

  4. And promoting equal access to higher education through institutionalized support, including counseling, advocacy, referrals, and development and implementation of education forums and events

 

All are Welcome!

Although its focus is women, the Center is open to ALL with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.

COUNSELING AND ADVOCACY

The Center provides personal (confidential) counseling on quality of life issues:

  • Parenting

  • Health

  • Housing

  • Stress

  • Family Dynamics

  • Violence

  • Self-Esteem

PROGRAMMING

 

WORKSHOPS:

  • Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention

  • Sexual Harassment

  • Women’s Leadership

  • 12-Step Personal Development

 

PROGRAMS:

  • C.H.O.I.C.E. Program for incarcerated adolescents

  • Role Model Program – co-sponsored by the NY Coalition of 100 Black Women – offers scholarships and matches selected high-achieving students with professional women for an intensive mentoring experience

  • Gender-Specific/ All Women’s Freshman Seminar Class

  • S.H.A.D.E.S. (Sisiters Having a Definite excellence Strategy) – Student Club devoted to women’s empowerment through service and leadership

  • MEC Women’s Services Committee

As Director, Safiya Bandele is responsible for the supervision of the Center’s social workers, advocates, administrative assistants, interns and volunteers.  As a counselor and advisor, her focus areas include Rape Crisis Counseling; Domestic Violence 101; Sexual Harassment; Trainer for Trainers, Conflict Mediation & Resolution, Bereavement Counseling, Intervention for Men who Batter, Multicultural Counseling, Women’s Health Group facilitation, and Human Sexuality.

 

Professor Bandele also teaches English Composition, Women’s Studies, Gender Specific Freshmen Experience Seminar and Women’s Health and Wellness
