Academic Dismissal Any time the minimum cumulative GPA falls below the required criteria for three consecutive semesters or more, the student may be deemed a dismissal candidate of the College and is sent a letter from the Office of Academic Transformation & Success (OATS) notifying them that their records are up for review for academic dismissal by the College. Dismissal candidates are allowed to submit a petition on their behalf to the OATS Committee indicating why they should not be dismissed, but in no way guarantees that the student will not be dismissed. All dismissal candidates have the right to submit a petition in hopes that the Committee will gain a better understanding of the student’s academic experience. Students who are dismissed from the College are notified and referred to CUNY’s “New Start Program” located on the campus of Kingsborough Community College.
Appeals for Review of Dismissal Action A dismissed student is required to sit out from the College for at least a year before they can apply for readmission. However, a dismissed student may file for an appeal for reinstatement to the Office of Academic Transformation & Success Committee if it is felt that there is good cause for immediate reinstatement. The OATS committee will review the appeal along with appropriate documentation within a specific time frame only that will be specified to the student. The student will be notified of the outcome of the appeal before the beginning of the subsequent semester, and will receive a written contract regarding the conditions for continuance should they be reinstated (only).
If the reinstatement appeal is not approved, the student has the right to appeal to the College-wide Committee on Academic Standards and Regulations (ASRC) for a final ruling. A copy of the appeal form is to be sent from the ASRC to the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA). If the ASRC rules in favor of reinstatement, then they will forward the committee’s recommendation with copies to be distributed to the student, the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office for Academic Transformation & Success (OATS). OATS will then forward a list of all students who are reinstated to the Registrar, Student Services, SEEK/Special Programs, and College of Freshman Studies. Probation and reinstated students must adhere to all recommendations put forth by OATS.
